Data Center Energy Consumption Model

Note: For full data center IT equipment profile see the Emerson white paper - "Energy Logic: Reducing Data Center ..."

Environmentally Friendly

Low Energy consumption due to energy efficient equipment.

The below graphic shows the typical energy consumption in a data centre. The green coloured areas represent the IT equipment itself whereas the orange areas represent the infrastructure which is necessary to run this equipment. This illustrates that it is almost 50% of the energy which is used in the infrastructure area; thus a very important area to focus on reducing consumption. Since the full pie chart represents the total energy costs of a data centre, it is easy to see where the biggest costs reduction effects could be achieved.

The Top 3 priorities are in:

  1. Low power processors
  2. High efficiency power supplies
  3. Effective cooling.
